The Girth System

GIRTH SYSTEMS FOR HALFBREED SADDLES:

  1. In skirt Single Rig

This is the standard Western style rigging and can use a double billet on the off side and a latigo on the near side. It can also use a latigo off side or a bates rig can be fitted.

2. In skirt Double Rig

This can be used with a latigo each side to give a Vee Pull or a second girth system can be used to meet sporting body rules. This choice of rigging dees also allows for back and forward movement.

3. Single In skirt Rig with Built in Surcingle

This can be used with a latigo each side to give a Vee Pull or a second girth system can be used to meet sporting body rules. This choice of rigging dees also allows for back and forward movement.

4. Single In skirt Rig with Vee Pull

The latigo is fitted each side and when used in conjunction with the flank girth dee or slot it gives a Vee lockdown to stabilize your saddle front and back. It also allows for back and forward movement.

5. Double In skirt Rig or built in Surcingle

This can be used in any combination to give a Vee Pull on your saddle, but also move the saddle back or forward.

FOR TODAY’S POPULAR HALFBREED SADDLES

This Northern Champion Drafter is US bound. The new owner custom ordered his saddle with Ezee ride oxbows and a Bates right girth system.

girth2

Ezee ride oxbows are especially shaped. The width of the tread is 4″. It has a 1″ thick piece of foam rubber to cushion the feet. For long hours in the saddle these are well worth considering. girth3

The off side of the Bates system is a red hide latigo strap. It does up just like a normal latigo on a Western saddle and once done up to the correct length does not need adjusting unless perhaps you change horses.

girth4

The near side has the wide strap that passes through the dee on the saddle and back through the top slot on the Bates buckle back through the saddle dee and then through the bottom slot on the Bates buckle where the buckle is situated.

The great thing about this system is that when mounted on your horse you can reach down and grab the end of the strap and pill it up a hole without dismounting. Once doneup the tongueof the buckle prevents the ring on the girth from coming out of the buckle. This is a strong easy to use system.

girth5

Near side has a two inch webbing strap, which passes around the buckle and inskirt rigging 2 – 3 times then buckles up. girth6

When buckled up the excess strap passes through the holder.

girth7

The offside has a 2 inch web strap which passes over the C rigging so that it is actually double thickness at the point it buckles up. girth8

The girth, when not in use can be buckled onto the leather attachment as shown so it is not dragging in the dirt and picking up burrs.

girth9

This attachment is for the loose end of the girth when not in use.

Polished aluminium oxbow is part of the standard mounts package. Universal oxbow fits standard 1 1/4″ leathers or 2 1/2″ fender strap.

Above – Double girth system provides extra stability and if one girth should malfunction you have a back up system.
